Travel planning
Travel from Australia is long enough that the clinical schedule and recovery needs must be known before booking. Keep flexibility for pre-treatment tests, observation and possible changes. A companion can be useful for complex procedures or mobility limitations.
Check passport validity, visa requirements, airline medical clearance when relevant, medication transport and travel insurance exclusions.
Medical records
Australian patients may have records across a GP, private specialist, public hospital and imaging provider. Collect the most recent specialist letter, relevant pathology, imaging reports and a complete medication list. Original DICOM imaging may be requested later.
Payment and insurance
Medicare generally does not operate as overseas treatment cover. Private insurance and superannuation arrangements vary. Ask the insurer what overseas elective care, complications and documentation are covered. Obtain an itemised hospital quotation rather than a single package total.
Return-home follow-up
Arrange a GP or relevant specialist in Australia before travel so post-treatment results have a local clinical home. Ask the Chinese institution which tests are needed, when they are due and what symptoms require urgent review.
